چکیده

AMPUTATED LIMBS persist as "phantoms" in their owners' consciousness. Temporary or permanent severance of afferent pathways may also give rise to subjective experiences in which the position of the phantom limb is different from that of the real one. Attempts have been made to explain phantom phenomena as expressions of a "body image" or "body schema" subserving a preconscious neurophysiological function. Varying interpretations have been placed upon the nature and behaviour of the theoretical body schema, but the original proposition of Head and Holmes remains the most satisfying. They proposed that the body image is formed and constantly changed by individual experience, and its role is a postural model, "against which all subsequent changes of posture are measured before they enter consciousness." No organized body of data exists to support the postural notion of the body schema, nor to define the limits of intrinsic plasticity proposed by Head and Holmes.

Cortical Representations of Body Parts in Children and in Individuals Born with Missing Hands

The present thesis addressed the cortical representation of body parts in normally limbed children and adults as well as in individuals born with missing hands. With the application of behavioral, neuropsychological and neuroimaging methodologies in different populations, i.e. healthy normally limbed adults and children as well as participants with limbs missing since birth, this issue could be...

Body schema and body awareness of amputees.

AIM The phantom phenomenon is a well-known example of the difference between body awareness and body schema. The present study is aimed at showing how body changes and prosthesis use are reflected in body schema and body awareness-the latter relating to the image that various amputees have of their bodies. SUBJECT AND METHODS (i) Examining the configuration of body schema: A trial examining t...

Body Integrity Identity Disorder

Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID) is a condition in which people generally desire amputation of healthy limbs but can also desire paralysis, blindness, or other disabilities. The current study explored the demographics and experiences of individuals with this condition with specific attention to perceived physical differences of the affected limbs. Participants were recruited from three B...

Fabrication of anthropomorphic phantoms for use in total body photon irradiation and total skin electron irradiation studies

Introduction: Total Skin Electron Therapy (TSET) and Total Body Irradiation (TBI) are kinds of treatment which use electron and photon beams to treat special types of cancers. The aim of these techniques are to deliver uniform dose to the entire skin while minimizing delivered dose to organs at risk. To check the homogeneity of dose delivery in TBI and TSET, using a humanoid ph...

Phantom limbs and neural plasticity.

The study of phantom limbs has received tremendous impetus from recent studies linking changes in cortical topography with perceptual experience. Systematic psychophysical testing and functional imaging studies on patients with phantom limbs provide 2 unique opportunities. First, they allow us to demonstrate neural plasticity in the adult human brain. Second, by tracking perceptual changes (suc...
